WHAT’S NEW AND
SPECIAL IN VINTAGE DRESSES?
What’s new and exciting in
vintage dresses? Authentic styles in truly authentic fabrics, buying online
from an exotic location, colorful accents, a perfect fit from a custom studio,
and a former Hollywood designer who now makes affordable dresses that cost
about 1/3 what others charge for a similar dress. Hard to believe? It’s all
true, and available from a small boutique, called WhirlingTurban, located in
Bali.
Katherine Robinson, the designer and owner of WhirlingTurban, began her journey
towards creating “truly vintage fashion” working for Clifford Olson whose
swingin’ celebrity clientele, included Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin,
etc., and then in the fashion capital of the United States – New York – where
she worked for old-school couturiers, Bill Blass and Geoffrey Beene.
She moved from New York to Hollywood to design costumes for such top
entertainment personalities as Uma Thurman, Salma Hayek, and Halle
Berry (just to name a few of the more delicious ones), bands like Foo
Fighters and U2, commercial clients from Intel to Chiquita
Banana to Apple Computers, for directors such as Spike Lee and
for Steven Spielberg’s film “Amistad” (costumes nominated for an Academy
Award), and TV, including a Bette Midler HBO Special which won the Emmy
Award for Best Costumes.
After ten years of creating costumes for demanding divas of the movies, TV, and
New York’s Fashion Week, she left (fled from?) Hollywood in 2002 and relocated
to her custom studio in Bali . . . where she now works in a tropical
garden setting and offers prices that mere mortals can afford.
VINTAGE STYLES – In the past decade, WhirlingTurban has been
specializing in making the most authentic line of mid-Century vintage
reproduction dresses in the world, selling exclusively on the Internet.
WhirlingTurban -- the go-to source for custom-fit ready-mades and made-to-order
dresses and wedding dresses -- is among the first results on Google, having
long established itself with vintage enthusiasts worldwide. The website
showcases dozens of ultra-flattering designs for every body type.
SHOPPING ONLINE is the new way-of-the-world. Due to an increasing demand
for mid-Century dresses – both the tea length, poufy-skirted variety and their
slinky, form-fitting opposites – WhirlingTurban’s recently launched Bombshell
Boutique line features the prettiest as well as the shapeliest ready-made
dresses in an array of sizes and top-notch fabrics. Their modest prices range
from $100 up to $500 (with most styles between $150 and $195). For today’s
budget conscious shopper looking for vintage perfection on the Internet,
WhirlingTurban is meeting the demand.
WhirlingTurban uses not only the styles of the 1940’s/1950’s but the small
details that give vintage its unique charm. They search for fabrics that would
have been available then with the construction methods and beautiful
workmanship used in that golden period. Often they even have their own fabric
woven or printed in Bali to meet these standards.
COLORFUL ACCENTS – Today, many gals want a solid-color dress, but with
the added fun and whimsy of colorful accents that go with an event’s color
theme or just to satisfy their own preference. A customer can request fabric
from the shop for the contrast color – or even send her own – so she can get exactly
what she wants, no matter how unusual. This personalizes the design, but the
dresses are still in the ready-made category (and price range).
With more gals wanting an artistic splash of color, WhirlingTurban is currently
featuring the Wing Bust Dress with an accent color/contrast fabric at the
bustline. Katherine explains, “This design is an ideal choice for several
reasons:
1.) we can make it at a great price
2.) we don’t have to worry about running out of this fabric
because we have it custom woven for us (!)
3.) the style is adorable and flattering on, and
4.) it is an easy-adaptable fit.

FEATURED DESIGN – "WING BUST DRESS"
This featured Wing Bust design comes in a few versions. The most expensive, a wedding
dress in couture fabric, comes in white (softly kissed with silver) or ivory
(with gold) and with the bride’s choice of accent color. The dress in a
solid color is $490; or, with her own supplied fabric for the contrast, it is
$525. Katherine goes on to say “We have this fabric custom woven here in Bali
by hand without any electricity, and we know the weaver personally. It meets
our standards of being identical to (not just ‘inspired
by’) an authentic vintage fabric available in mid-Century. The metallic fiber
in the fabric is subtle and elegant, not ‘glitzy’ or flashy.” For the
non-bride, WhirlingTurban makes the same style in other far less costly vintage
fabrics – fun prints – from $169 to $195.
“LOANER” DRESSES (and other unique services) FOR A PERFECT FIT – In
response to the question, “How do I know it will fit?” and to allow customers
to try on a dress before it is ordered, WhirlingTurban offers a brilliant
solution for a small fee, a muslin “loaner dress.” They will also alter and
make adjustments to their standard-size “beyond-ready-made” dresses for an
absolutely perfect fit. Elsewhere, these are unheard-of services for ready-made
dresses.
CUSTOM TOUCHES – Many customizing options (matching bows, boleros,
belts, alternate halter straps, separates, underskirts, etc.) are available at
minimal cost. Such personal tweaking plus custom fitting lift a ready-made
dress from “off-the-rack” status to “one-of-a-kind” level – at only a fraction
of the price of custom.
“Elegant quirky,” “unique” and “personalized” all describe WhirlingTurban’s
wide assortment of sophisticated/edgy “Pinup/Bombshell Dresses.” Of course,
WhirlingTurban ships worldwide.
Nothing delights Katherine more than hearing from satisfied customers all over
the world who are tickled pink with their near-couture dresses at affordable
ready-made prices.
